Clayton Hotel Manchester City Centre Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Clayton Hotel Manchester City Centre, you immediately get that “proper hotel” feeling — you know, the kind where the lobby actually looks like someone put thought into it rather than just throwing some chairs around. The building sits right on Portland Street, and honestly, you couldn’t ask for a better spot in Manchester. I mean, when couples are rating the location 9.4 out of 10, they’re clearly onto something. The whole place has this modern but not-trying-too-hard vibe that works really well for a four-star property.

Location & Getting Around

Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re literally in the thick of everything without feeling like you’re camping out in Times Square. The Northern Quarter is just a short walk away, which is where you’ll find the best independent shops and that famous street art everyone posts on Instagram. Manchester Piccadilly station is close enough that you won’t need a taxi with your luggage, but far enough that you’re not hearing train announcements at 6 AM. The shopping areas around Market Street are right there too, and if you’re into football (which, let’s be honest, you probably are if you’re in Manchester), Old Trafford and the Etihad are both easy to reach.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was actually bigger than I expected — not massive, but you’re not bumping into furniture every time you turn around. The bed was properly comfortable, and they’ve got those blackout curtains that actually work, which is a blessing when you’re trying to sleep off a night in the city center. The bathroom was clean and modern, with a decent shower that had proper water pressure. You get all the usual stuff — tea and coffee facilities, decent WiFi, and a TV that’s not from 2005.

Breakfast & Dining

The breakfast setup here is honestly impressive — they’ve got everything from a full English to continental options, plus they actually cater to people with dietary requirements. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free — it’s all there, which is refreshing because so many hotels just slap some fruit on a plate and call it vegetarian. The buffet style works well, and the quality is solid. I particularly liked that they had proper coffee, not just those machine things that taste like disappointment. There’s also a restaurant on-site, though with Manchester’s food scene right outside your door, you might want to explore a bit.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is how it balances being professional without being stuffy. The staff know what they’re doing, the location genuinely can’t be beaten, and everything just works the way it should. You’re not paying five-star prices, but you’re getting four-star quality in a spot that puts you right in the heart of one of England’s most vibrant cities. Whether you’re here for business, shopping, football, or just exploring Manchester’s music and cultural scene, you’ll walk out the front door and be exactly where you want to be. That location score of 9.4 isn’t just a number — it’s the real deal.

Reviews of Clayton Hotel Manchester City Centre

  • Horrol from Hungary (9/10)

It was great experience for us, everything was exactly the same what was the "promise" like, the service, pictures, prices, location, cleaning, bed comfort… it means there was no any bad surprise! Because I think this is what lot of or I can say almost every guest expect, they wish what is in the description, what they see on the pictures without bad surprises. So in summary, here you got what you want.

  • Kyle from United Kingdom (8/10)

    Location was better than expected

  • Karen from United Kingdom (8/10)

Location was great. Very comfortable bed. Very clean room. Refreshments provided however didn't realise they were all included in room rate.

  • Ansam from Norway (8/10)

I truly enjoyed my stay at the hotel The location was perfect, close to everything I needed, and the accessibility to restaurants, shops, and attractions was excellent. The staff was welcoming and attentive, making sure I felt well taken care of throughout my stay. The rooms was comfortable, clean, and well-equipped, which made my experience even better.

  • Karen from United Kingdom (9/10)

Bright, open and clean. Centrally located close to everything.

  • Rachel from United Kingdom (8/10)

Nice hotel, room comfortable, nice and clean and bedding lovely.
Tea / coffee tray is good.
I had a double & a single bed in the room, and it was just me, so I had plenty of room.
As a visually impaired lady, I always struggle with lighting in hotels, and unfortunately, one of the bedside lights did not work.
The bathroom is quite nice. Awkward position of toilet, behind the door, but nice size walk in shower. No little toiletries, just 3 bottles of essential hand-wash, shower gel, and a combo shampoo/ conditioner but lovely quality & beautiful towels.
Location was perfect for needs and walking distance to where I needed to be, the conference centre.
Breakfast is extra & we booked on arrival, so we paid £14 rather than the £18 on the day.
Breakfast quality and choice were superb. However, as VI again, I found the area very dark, and I struggled, so I didn't enjoy the many options.
Breakfast staff were lovely. I think the ladies who stood out names were Fiona and Rachel, i think. Very cheerful and smiley. Fiona was working hard in the restaurant cleaning / laying tables & happily engaging with the customers. Very nice way to start the morning.
Enjoyed the reasonable 11am checkout time but found being directed to a computer to check out when obviously blind was a little unhelpful. I understand that this is a modern, efficient, and sleek way to check out, but exceptions should be made in my situation. Luckily, I had help from my daughter.
All in all, a nice, clean, comfortable hotel and a very convenient location.
